Move over morning coffee and midday matcha because golden lattes have proven to be in growing demand in restaurants, cafes, coffee houses, and juice bars to name a few! In fact, the Guardian named the turmeric latte two years back in 2016 “your drink of choice”, and since then it has exploded! The cozy warm, slightly earthy, sometimes sweet and savory frothy cuppa combined with cinnamon and cardamon really is a match made in heaven. I just love how this latte makes me feel! If you haven’t tried a golden latte it’s seriously time you do because aside from how delicious this recipe is, the health benefits of turmeric and in particular curcumin is well documented in scientific literature!
Turmeric also has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine and is one of the most extensively studied herbal medicine with over 10,000 research papers listed in the National Institutes of Health PubMed database. It is used to reduce inflammation, boost immunity, increase liver function, treat skin problems and support weight loss. curcumin the most important property in turmeric supports enzymes, hormone receptors, cell growth factors and acts as a broad spectrum all-natural antibiotic.
For turmeric’s uptake to be more absorbable by the body and to stop it from being metabolized in the intestinal wall, black pepper is used which studies show increase absorbability by 2000%! This is due to black pepper’s active ingredient, ‘Bioperine,’ which also increases the absorbability of B vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids, and minerals. Turmeric is also fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves in fat, so without father active component called curcumin has a difficult time making it past the stomach, into the small intestine and then into the blood, where the greatest benefits are reaped, which is why coconut oil is added to my recipe. If I could sip on liquid gold all day this would definitely be it!
