I wanted this smoothie to focus on eye and skin health along with being super anti-inflammatory. Turmeric has been known for centuries to include a potent active anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin, which also acts as an antioxidant. However, ingesting curcumin alone does not lead to the associated health benefits due to its poor bioavailability. This is the result of its poor absorption, expedited metabolism, and rapid elimination. For this reason, the black pepper (piperine) I have included in this recipe will assist the uptake of curcumin, which has been shown in the scientific literature to increase bioavailability by 2000%! Curcumin has also been shown to improve systemic markers of oxidative stress and systemic inflammation, which reduces risk for disease to include cancer and metabolic syndrome.
I’ve also included beta carotene-rich foods (an antioxidant) in this smoothie to include carrots, orange bell pepper and it’s also found in dark leafy greens to prevent free radical damage plus eye and skin health. Beta carotene converts to the fat-soluble vitamin A, which is why it’s important to consume fat (in this case creamy cashew butter) with it for its uptake to make it more bioavailable. I have also included vitamin C foods, which are also important for skin health.
Ginger is included here, which is also super anti-inflammatory and supports digestion and also aids in the prevention of nausea. With all of these amazing foods and their properties combined, you can bet that this delicious golden creamsicle is now only incredible healing – it is like a flavourful creamsicle in a cup.
