Golden-Creamsicle Thrive Smoothie

I wanted this smoothie to focus on eye and skin health along with being super anti-inflammatory. Turmeric has been known for centuries to include a potent active anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin, which also acts as an antioxidant. However, ingesting curcumin alone does not lead to the associated health benefits due to its poor bioavailability. This is the result of its poor absorption, expedited metabolism, and rapid elimination. For this reason, the black pepper (piperine) I have included in this recipe will assist the uptake of curcumin, which has been shown in the scientific literature to increase bioavailability by 2000%! Curcumin has also been shown to improve systemic markers of oxidative stress and systemic inflammation, which reduces risk for disease to include cancer and metabolic syndrome.

I’ve also included beta carotene-rich foods (an antioxidant) in this smoothie to include carrots, orange bell pepper and it’s also found in dark leafy greens to prevent free radical damage plus eye and skin health. Beta carotene converts to the fat-soluble vitamin A, which is why it’s important to consume fat (in this case creamy cashew butter) with it for its uptake to make it more bioavailable. I have also included vitamin C foods, which are also important for skin health.

Golden Creamsicle mise en place/ food prep

Ginger is included here, which is also super anti-inflammatory and supports digestion and also aids in the prevention of nausea. With all of these amazing foods and their properties combined, you can bet that this delicious golden creamsicle is now only incredible healing – it is like a flavourful creamsicle in a cup. I like to add ice to mine, especially during the warmer months. I can’t wait for you to try this one and let me know what you think!

Recipe by Priscilla Soligo Course: Breakfast, Snacks, Thrive Smoothies

Ingredients

  • 300g 1¼ Cups Unsweetened almond milk (or preferred plant milk)

  • 70g ½ Small Orange, peeled, deseeded

  • 65g ⅓ Cup Orange Bell Pepper, deseeded, chopped

  • 60g ⅓ Cup Carrot, peeled, chopped

  • 45g 1½ Cups Dark Leafy Greens

  • 30g 1½ Tbsps Cashew Butter

  • 20g 1 Heaped Tbsp Fresh Ginger

  • 20g Protein Powder (is not the weighted measurement it is the amount of protein)

  • 2 Tbsps Fibers to choose from: Chia (thicker smoothie), or ground flax, or acacia (thinner smoothie & most gentle), or psyllium husk or powder (no more than 1 Tbsp, as it’s super thick – mix with 1 Tbsp of another fiber here), or use a combination. Start with and if you’re still hungry add an extra Tbsp next time. Drink plenty of water when increasing fiber intake and go slow.

  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder

  • Generous Pinch Fresh black pepper

  • Optional ½ Cup Ice

Directions

  • In a high speed blender, add in the liquids.
  • Add in remaining ingredients.
  • Blend all ingredients until well integrated and creamy smooth.

Notes

  • Storage: Smoothies are best consumed immediately after blending to prevent oxidation and for best taste, nutrient density and flavour. I recommend having your ingredients prepped ahead of time and quickly blending before you head out the door if you are taking this on your way to work, or out with you. Thrive smoothies are potable too!
